One month of learning Game Development

What’s up? It’s been nearly a month since I started to learn game development. And after one month of experience, I can safely say that game development learning or game development in general doesn’t go as smoothly as you thought in your head.

Now to the main thing, what have I been doing?

The short answer in not much. Last month we had Eid-ul-azha. So, on the 26th of June I went home to have Eid with my family and returned on the 4th this month. And didn’t really do much of studying in the last couple of days. Somehow I didn’t have the time to do game dev. I know if I keep doing this then my dream of becoming a developer will stay a dream forever. And for the week before Eid I completed a video series from brackey’s called “How to make a video game”. And followed the “The Unity Tutorial For Complete Beginners” from Game Maker’s Toolkit.

Let me give a short review of these two tutorials.

  • I’ll talk about the series from Brackey’s in a bit.
  • Game Maker’s Toolkit doesn’t make tutorial videos, but what they have accomplished in their first try is really praiseworthy. It really is a beginner friendly tutorial. The tutorial is on making a 2D Flappy Bird game in Unity Engine. It starts at the very beginning, from the introduction of the editor to how to make a game over UI. I made a Flappy Bird game by following GMTK. After that, I made a simple 2D platformer with a little bit of help here and there from the internet. Now I feel like if anyone wants to start game development, I can gladly recommend GMTK’s “The Unity Tutorial for Complete Beginners” to them.

So, I said in my last post that I sucked at drawing. That’s why I learned a bit of Blender, so I can make 3D games. Then why did I make a 2D platformer? The reason is simple. I don’t have enough knowledge or skill to make a prototype of a 3D game, let alone a full game with movement, gameplay, level design, and everything else. The Brackey’s video series I took didn’t really prepare me to handle that kind of skill level. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. That’s why I think that series isn’t something to follow but something to binge watch to get a general idea of what Unity is and its editor.

Let me tell you one more thing: you don’t need to have good drawing skills to make a game as a beginner. (Revolutionary idea! I know.)

What now? What am I going to do now?

A few days ago, I was browsing and mindlessly end up in Unity’s landing page. There was a link named Unity Learn. Also there is a Learn tab in Unity Hub. I headed there and found some interesting tutorials made by Unity. I’m thinking of completing a tutorial specifically the Ruby’s adventure tutorial.

And from now and on, I’ll try to make this blog more often. I’ll try to publish a blog every week. Maybe every Friday.

You’ll be hearing from me then!!!!
